Mafalda

Quino · 1964 · Argentina

The comic strip about a girl who worries about the world. Short, funny, full of Argentine «vos», and the pictures help you follow.

What it's about

Mafalda is a comic strip by the Argentine cartoonist Quino, published from 1964 to 1973. Mafalda is a six-year-old girl from a middle-class Buenos Aires family who hates soup, loves the Beatles and worries about world peace, humanity and the adults who run things. Her friends each have a clear personality: Felipe the daydreamer, Manolito the money-minded son of a grocer, Susanita who only wants to be a mother, Miguelito the philosopher and Libertad, tiny and radical. Each strip is only four panels, so it's short, funny and often surprisingly deep.

How to read it in Spanish

Perfect for intermediate learners: short texts, pictures to help you, and lots of Argentine Spanish with «vos». Some jokes are about 1960s politics, so read a strip twice before deciding you missed the point.
