Aprendí a nadar a los treinta
I learned to swim at thirty. A man explains why he never learned to swim as a child and how he finally did.

For thirty years I had a secret: I couldn't swim. As a child I lived in Zacatecas, far from the sea, and my school had no swimming pool. When my friends went to a river, I always said I had a headache.
Me daba vergüenza pedir ayuda: ¿quién aprende a nadar a mi edad?Over the years the secret got heavier. On beach vacations I stayed on the sand “looking after the things” while everyone went into the water. I was too embarrassed to ask for help: who learns to swim at my age?
No pude decir que no.Everything changed the day my six-year-old niece invited me to her swimming class. At the end, the coach asked if any dad wanted to get into the water. My niece shouted: “My uncle!” I couldn't say no.
Me inscribí. That day I didn't swim: I only floated and swallowed water. But the coach told me she had classes for adults on Tuesdays. I signed up. The first weeks I felt ridiculous among seventy-year-old ladies who swam better than me. I didn't stop going until, in March, I crossed the pool without stopping.
Now I swim three times a week. What I learned wasn't only to swim. I learned that embarrassment weighs more than water, and that it's never too late to start something, even if a six-year-old girl is watching you, laughing her head off.
