When I was a girl, the Day of the Dead scared me a little. I didn't understand why my mom put photos of my great-grandparents in the living room and why she filled the house with orange flowers.
These flowers are called cempasúchil. My mom used to say that their smell and color guide the souls to the house. That's why she also made a path of petals from the door to the altar.
On the altar we put what each person liked. For my grandfather, a cigarette and a cup of coffee; for my aunt Lupe, who had a real sweet tooth, chocolates and pan de muerto. There were also candles, papel picado and a glass of water, because the souls arrive tired from the journey.
Last year, for the first time, I prepared the altar on my own. I put my mom's photo in the center, with her favorite earrings and a plate of mole. While I was doing it, I realized I wasn't afraid anymore. It's strange, but that day I felt her closer than ever.
This year I want my son to help me. He's six and asks a lot of questions. I hope he understands what took me so long to understand: that remembering is also a way of celebrating.
