No era el tren más rápido: tardaba casi seis horas, pero yo no tenía prisa.I had always wanted to travel by train through the north of Spain, so in October I finally bought a ticket from León to Santiago de Compostela. It wasn't the fastest train: it took almost six hours, but I wasn't in a hurry.

Leaving León, the landscape was dry and yellow, with stone villages and fields of wheat that had already been cut. Little by little mountains started to appear and green took over everything: forests, meadows with cows and a thin mist that never went away.

Me ofreció unas y empezamos a hablar. «Allí ganaba más dinero», me dijo, «pero aquí la lluvia huele a mi infancia».In the seat opposite there was a Galician lady with a bag full of chestnuts. She offered me some and we started talking. She told me she had worked for thirty years in Switzerland and had come back to her village when she retired. “There I earned more money,” she told me, “but here the rain smells of my childhood.”

When we arrived in Ourense, the lady got off and left me the bag of chestnuts. “For the journey,” she said. From the window I watched her walk slowly under her umbrella, without looking back.

I arrived in Santiago at night and, of course, it was raining. I had planned to see the cathedral, but I sat down in a bar, ordered a Galician broth and opened the bag. I thought that sometimes the best part of a trip isn't the destination, but the people you share the journey with.
